About Express Entry Canada

On January 1, 2015, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) officially introduced an electronic arrangement, on the lines of a similar system already in operation in Australia, called Skill Select. The Canadian electronic system is known as Express Entry, even as it has been started to administer the petitions submitted for the prized and the much sought after Permanent Residence (PR), through these federal economic immigration schemes, namely, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Express Entry Immigration program is an application management program used to process and manage applications by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) received with three of the federal economic immigration systems designed for skilled workers in Canada.
Express Entry is a competitive program for immigration and all the eligible candidates are ranked against each other. Candidates should rank higher to become eligible to apply for Canada permanent residence. Candidates are ranked on the basis of their education, age, work experience, language proficiency and other factors against each other.
It takes a few months for families and individuals with Express Entry to settle in Canada as permanent residents.

The Process

Eligibility – Potential applicants should be eligible under these Federal Economic Immigration Systems –
Candidates should be eligible as per one of the above federal programs to enter the pool of Express Entry and a part of Provincial Nominee Programs is aligned.
Eligibility requirements also vary from program to program. But all candidates should have 1 year of experience in skilled work along with the proficiency of a certain level on the approved English or French language test. All Express Entry candidates are also screened for medical issues and criminal records.
Express Entry Profile – An Express Entry profile must be created for all eligible candidates and submitted as EOI or Expression of Interest. Eligible candidates will also score on the basis of their profile and ranked against other candidates. The maximum score for Express Entry is 1200 as per the Comprehensive Ranking System or CRS. Candidates can take steps to improve their score and their rankings. Higher CRS score improves the chances to get Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Invitations to Apply (ITA) – Express Entry draws are conducted usually in every 2 weeks by IRCC. Candidates who are above a given rank can apply for permanent residence in Canada. Uninvited candidate profiles will be expired within 12 months. However, they may submit another profile during this period.
Apply for Permanent Residence – After getting the Invitation to Apply (ITA), you can submit a complete application within 60 days for your permanent residence. Provide extensive personal details apart from supporting documents in this application. The process is completely online.
Wait for the final decision after submitting the application. It usually takes 6 months to process the application. After approval, you will be authorized to become a permanent resident in Canada.

To be eligible to apply for the Canada Immigration Canada PR Federal Skilled Worker Visa, the applicant –
  • Must have had this experience within the last 10 years, or
  • Qualify for Arranged Employment with a Labour Market Opinion and a full-time, permanent job offer from a Canadian employer; or
  • Have completed a Ph.D. in Canada, or have completed two years of study in Canada towards a Ph.D., in both cases at a recognized institution; and
  • Pass a minimum threshold of language ability for one of Canada’s two official languages (English/French).
  • In addition to fulfilling eligibility and points requirements, applicants must show that they have sufficient settlement funds to support themselves and their dependents after arrival in Canada. Applicants and their dependents must also undergo medical examinations and security clearances as part of the Canadian immigration application process.
